What is Performance Excellence
Jason defines Performance Excellence holistically: It's not only the consistent on-demand execution of learned abilities through the monitoring, planning, and practice of technical, tactical, and psychological skills but also having them conducted in a meaningful way that's underpinned by personal and professional fulfillment, satisfaction, and happiness. Below are the four pillars.
Self-developmentUnderstanding the self through the awareness of identity, values, and meaning leads to positive personal development. For example, reflecting on the next steps when transitioning from sport into professional life.
|
Optimized LearningDeveloping self-regulatory skills that can help get the most out of training, coaching, and learning environments. For example, creating a reflective practice after training to take inventory of what went well and what could improve.
|
Perform On-demandExecuting situationally specific skills in the moment of need to achieve preferred results. For example, using a pre-race routine to get into an optimal level of arousal and focused mindset.
|
Well-beingDeveloping the emotional, cognitive and social parameters that lead to coping with everyday life stressors. For example, developing self-care strategies like meditation to support work and life stress.
|
What We Work On
You-the-client will work towards understanding, accepting and taking action to consistently perform in the upper range of your abilities and enjoy the performance process through the following four areas:
MindsetMental attitudes or inclination that includes thoughts and feelings. For example, a growth mindset stipulates that any abilities can be developed and improved through interest and deliberate practice.
|
Mental ToolsMental tools are foundational. Psychosomatic and cognitive tools or methods used to improve mental or physical abilities used in performance. The "big five" mental tools are self-talk, imagery, goal setting, arousal regulation, and attentional control. For example, developing a set of process goals in practice that directs focus.
|
EnvironmentInvolves creating a physical, social, and technological learning space that promotes constructive mindset, habits and skills development. For example, charging a phone in a different room than the bedroom.
|
HabitsBehaviours that influence physical and mental health. For example, developing a bedtime routine to improve sleep quality and duration helps recovery for better mood, training and performance.
|
Consulting Philosophy
A Consulting Philosophy allows practitioners to conceptualize client interventions proactively instead of reactively responding to issues by randomly selecting them. Jason's collaborative approach is summarized in four parts.
Person CentredUsing unconditional positive regard, authenticity and empathy to build a safe environment for the client to self-explore. It is the client's responsibility to work towards their goals.
|
Mindfulness BasedDeveloping the client's awareness of the subjective experience in each moment and a non-judgmental and non-reactive orientation towards that experience.
|
Strengths BasedFocusing on and leveraging the strengths and positive attributes the client already possesses to further self-development and help in their pursuits.
|
Solutions FocusedPlacing importance on discussing potential solutions rather than problems and committing to finding realistic, practical solutions for the client as quickly as possible

What Coaches and Professionals are saying about JBPC
Very professional. Always punctual. Accommodating in terms of scheduling. Encouraging. I felt the sessions were both reflective and motivating. I often felt refreshed and with a renewed motivation in the days/weeks after. ”
I felt like Jason made things very clear for me. Compared to my others I have worked with, he pushed me to find answers on my own and get to the root of the problem. ” I like speaking with someone that has the tools to help me grow to be a better person, be mentally stronger, and that has been able to find my weaknesses and make me view the world a little differently. ” |
I understand more about myself than I thought I would. He was very easy to understand as well as what felt like very good at getting me thinking in the right way towards the right answer. ” After three sessions, I already feel like a different, more mindful and motivated person. My relationship with coworkers and teammates is better, and I experience more pleasure when training. ” |
What Athletes are saying about JBPC
I have learned to literally trust the process. At meets where I found that I didn’t perform to the level I wanted to, Jason was there to remind me that there will be other opportunities to swim fast and that the meet we were at was not where I was supposed to peak at. That helped me refocus after championships, where I felt unsatisfied with my performance. ”
I definitely found that engaged in mental performance counselling has opened my eyes to the breadth and depth of mental skills that I have yet to develop and practice. I am excited and inspired to continue exploring and practising these skills! ” The plan was personalized and completely individualized, centred around my needs. I didn't feel like it was a one-size-fits-all kind of solution, which I really appreciated. ” |
I feel at ease in my mental preparation sessions with him because I feel like he listens well to my concerns and comments, is interested and asking questions, and takes me where I'm at in my fitness journey with no judgment. ” I learned patience this year when it comes to my swimming. I learned to enjoy the ups and downs of training and learning that just because I’m not making leaps forward doesn’t mean I’m not making progress. ” |
Jason really changed my perspective on how important the mental preparation was before a meet. A big meet can be stressful, but if I can focus on myself and only myself and accept that I can only control what I do, then it’s already less stressful. ”
